Not sure if your floor is solid wood or laminate? There are often a few easy ways to tell, so that you can use the appropriate cleaning products or replacements.

First, examine the texture. Solid wood often has an uneven texture with natural imperfections. If the surface feels too smooth or uniformly patterned, it’s likely laminate.

Next, look at the edges. Solid wood will usually have individual planks with visible seams, while laminate tends to have a more uniform, almost “click-together” look. Also, laminate can sometimes feel hollow underfoot, especially if it’s installed over padding, whereas solid wood is denser.

Lastly, try the “water test.” Drip a little water on a less noticeable area. Solid wood tends to absorb the moisture more slowly, while laminate will resist it entirely, as it’s designed to repel spills. These small differences can make a big impact on understanding your floor’s true nature!
