The P-trap is a simple, yet profoundly important part of your plumbing system. This little invention is a simple bent pipe that can be found under most sinks and toilets that connects a horizontal joint to a vertical one. It’s called a “P-trap” because it looks like the letter “P”. If you can believe it, this little thing is actually playing a large part in keeping your family healthy.

The reason for this is that P-traps are designed to keep your water draining properly. Inside the bend, there’s a small pool of water that collects sediment and other debris as it’s flushed down the drain. From the opposite direction, this bend prevents sewer gasses from floating up into your home through your drain. These gasses are not only smelly – they can be dangerous, too. Like nearly all parts of your home, the P-trap should be maintained. From time to time, you might disconnect it, empty it out, and re-attach it to make sure it continues to work properly.
